What does it mean to study at university?

A deeper understanding of your subject. A wider circle of people. The confidence to ask better questions—and decide what comes next.

By Knighton Education Consultancy · Reviewed 19 October 2026
For international applicants, UK residents and returning learners.
Students together on a university campus
Learning, friendships and experiences beyond the classroom.
    More than a timetable

    A place to learn.
    Room to become yourself.

University brings together structured study, independent work and a community of people exploring ideas. You develop subject knowledge, but you also practise making decisions, testing evidence, working with others and taking responsibility for your progress.

The experience will be different for a school leaver moving into halls, an international student arriving in the UK, and a parent studying around work. A good choice makes sense for your academic goals and your everyday life.

Ask what you want to learn, what you want to try, and what support will help you get there.
    01

Learn how to think, not only what to remember.

Lectures introduce ideas; seminars, studios, laboratories and projects give you ways to question and apply them. Read the course’s teaching and assessment details: essays, examinations, practical work and group projects ask different things of you.

    02

    Explore research and real problems.

Look for opportunities to develop your own project, attend departmental talks or contribute to research-related activities. Access depends on the course and department. Ask what undergraduates actually do, how supervision works and which facilities they can use.

    03

Find people, interests and a sense of belonging.

Subject societies, cultural groups, sport, volunteering and creative activities can help you meet people and try something new. Check the students’ union’s current opportunities and think about travel, accessibility and the time you can realistically give.

    04

Build experience for your next step.

Ask about careers advice, employer events, project work, placements and alumni activities. These can help you explore options and practise applications, but an advertised placement opportunity is not always a guaranteed placement. Find out how students are selected and supported.

    05

    Grow in independence—with support.

Managing study, money and new responsibilities takes practice. Compare academic-skills support, disability services, wellbeing provision and personal tutoring. If you commute, work or care for family, ask how attendance and support appointments fit your schedule.

There is more than one starting point

    Find the route that fits.

Your qualifications and ambitions help determine where to begin. Compare the full journey, including progression requirements, time and cost.

    Planning for 2027 entry

For most undergraduate courses, the UCAS equal-consideration deadline is 13 January 2027 at 6pm UK time. Some courses have different deadlines. The main Oxford and Cambridge deadline for 2027 entry was 15 October 2026 and has passed at the time of this review. Check the UCAS deadline and our Oxbridge guide.

England’s funding arrangements change for eligible courses starting from January 2027. Government guidance says applications open from late October 2026 for January 2027 starts, with applications for courses starting from August 2027 opening in spring 2027. Check the funding timetable. Use the relevant national funding body if you normally live elsewhere in the UK.

Home-fee classification and student-finance eligibility are separate assessments. Check the rules for the UK nation where you will study and your personal circumstances. UKCISA explains fee assessment in England.

    Questions students ask

A few things to think through.

    Should I choose by ranking?

Use rankings as one comparison tool, then examine the subject, teaching, accreditation, support and cost. Look at what a ranking measures and the year it covers. Your strongest option should fit your own goals and circumstances.

Can I return to education after working or raising a family?

Explore the provider’s mature-applicant route and how it assesses your qualifications and experience. Ask about Access courses, foundation routes, HND study or postgraduate options where appropriate. Confirm attendance, workload and funding before deciding.

Does living in the UK mean I pay home fees?

Not automatically. Fee status is assessed against the relevant rules, which consider more than your current address. Ask the institution for a formal assessment and check funding eligibility separately.

Is university the only route to my career?

Compare it with appropriate technical qualifications, apprenticeships or other professional training. Work backwards from your intended role: check what employers and any professional regulator require, then compare time, cost and learning style.

Will a degree guarantee a job?

No. A course can help you develop knowledge and experience, but outcomes also depend on your skills, applications, experience and the labour market. Ask what career support is available and how advertised placements work.

    How can Knighton help?

We can help you explore subjects, compare study routes and prepare your application questions. Bring your qualifications, preferred location, budget and target start date. Universities, funding bodies and immigration authorities make their own final decisions.

If you already hold an English qualification or studied in the UK, ask admissions whether it meets the requirement before booking another test. Fee status and English-language evidence are separate questions.

    QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

    A few things to check.

Does every course at a listed university accept Oxford ELLT?

Acceptance can vary by programme. Confirm the exact course, level, intake and applicant conditions with the admissions team.

    What score do I need?

Ask for the overall score and the minimum result for each skill. Use the requirement for your specific course rather than a general university score.

Can I use Spotlight for university admission?

The provider describes Spotlight as a placement test and states it is not suitable for university admissions. Confirm the correct admissions test before booking.

    When should I register?

Register after confirming acceptance, required scores and deadlines. Allow time for preparation and check the provider’s current booking and results arrangements.

    Keep the details current.

    MAKE THE NUMBERS YOUR OWN

Estimate your study and visa budget.

Enter amounts in pounds sterling. This estimate uses the published Student-route rates checked on 19 October 2026. Dependants must qualify separately.

The remaining budget subtracts your tuition deposit and confirmed scholarship/aid from total costs, with a minimum of zero. Use only awarded funding that covers the entered costs and check disbursement dates and tuition-only restrictions. Loans remain repayable. Other payments are assumed unpaid. Aid is not automatically deducted from visa funds evidence; confirm accepted sponsorship or loan evidence with your university.

For the funds-evidence estimate, living-cost months should match the required course/permission period. Evidence is capped at nine months; budgeting can cover longer. All family members are assumed to have the same visa duration and living-cost period.

Choose “Save as PDF” in your browser’s print window to download your current estimate.

    Outstanding tuition
    Living-cost budget for all applicants
    Visa application fees
    Healthcare surcharge for all applicants
Total estimated budget, including tuition already paid
    Confirmed scholarship / financial aid
Still needed after deposit and aid
Indicative funds evidence after deposit (aid not deducted)

Planning estimate only. Maintenance thresholds are used as a living-cost allowance; actual costs may be higher. Flights, priority services, appointments, document costs and other spending are excluded. Funds-evidence exemptions, accommodation deductions, sponsorship and differing family permission lengths are not calculated. Visa fees and healthcare payments are separate from the 28-day funds requirement. Your entries are calculated in this page and are not submitted by this calculator.

    TUITION PLUS LIVING COSTS

How much money must you show?

Where financial evidence is required, the current Student visa living-cost amounts are:

    Study locationPer monthMaximum 9 months
    London£1,529£13,761
    Outside London£1,171£10,539

Add the outstanding course fees required for your first academic year, as shown on your CAS and supported by accepted payment evidence. London means the City of London and the 32 London boroughs.

    WORKED EXAMPLES

Tuition plus living costs: what is the total?

Illustrations for one student who needs to show financial evidence, with at least nine months of study, no dependants and no accommodation deduction. The £16,000 first-year tuition fee is an example, not a course quotation.

    CalculationLondonOutside London
    Sample first-year tuition£16,000£16,000
    Living costs for 9 months£1,529 × 9 = £13,761£1,171 × 9 = £10,539
Total if no tuition is paid£29,761£26,539
    Example tuition deposit already paid£4,000£4,000
    Outstanding tuition after deposit£12,000£12,000
Funds still to show after deposit£25,761£22,539

Formula: required outstanding tuition + applicable living-cost requirement = funds to demonstrate.

Deduct a tuition payment only when evidenced as required, for example on the CAS or by a receipt from the sponsor. Use your actual CAS tuition amount and required study period. For a shorter course, the living-cost calculation changes.

The deposit reduces outstanding tuition, not the total cost of study. These figures exclude visa application fees, the immigration health surcharge, travel and any additional real-life spending; budget for those separately.

Check GOV.UK’s financial requirements and confirm your evidence with your university’s authorised team.

    The 28-day and 31-day rules

Funds must normally be held for at least 28 consecutive days. The end of that period must fall within 31 days before your visa application.

If you have held valid UK permission for at least 12 months at application, you may be exempt from showing funds. Differential-evidence applicants can still be asked for evidence. Loans and official sponsorship have their own evidence requirements.

These are visa evidence thresholds; budget separately for your actual spending. Check the financial requirements and exceptions.

    THE APPLICATION DATE MATTERS

    Graduate visa: the 2027 change.

    Qualification / application dateVisa duration
Eligible non-doctoral application by 31 December 20262 years
Eligible non-doctoral application from 1 January 202718 months
PhD or other doctoral qualification3 years

The relevant date is when you apply for the Graduate visa, rather than when you started your course.

You must apply from inside the UK, hold Student or Tier 4 (General) permission, complete an eligible course and meet the required UK study period. Your provider must report successful completion to the Home Office. Apply before your Student permission expires; you do not need to wait for a graduation ceremony.

The Graduate visa cannot be extended. A later switch, such as to Skilled Worker, requires you to meet that route’s conditions. Read the Graduate visa requirements.

    PLAN FOR EACH FAMILY MEMBER

Can your partner or children join you?

Student dependants are generally limited to qualifying government-sponsored students on courses longer than six months, or eligible full-time postgraduate students on courses lasting at least nine months. For courses beginning from 1 January 2024, the postgraduate course must be a PhD, other doctorate or research-based higher degree. A taught master’s does not normally qualify through this category.

Where required, each dependant needs £845 monthly in London or £680 outside London, for up to nine months, in addition to the student’s funds. Nine-month totals are £7,605 or £6,120 per dependant.

Check Student dependant eligibility and evidence.

    WORKED FAMILY EXAMPLES

Student, partner and one child: total funds.

These examples assume all three apply together, both dependants qualify, financial evidence is required for everyone, and nine months of living costs must be shown. The £16,000 first-year tuition fee is illustrative. No accommodation deduction is assumed.

Check eligibility first: these examples do not mean every student can bring dependants. Confirm that your course, sponsorship and family circumstances meet the Student dependant rules.

    CalculationLondonOutside London
    Sample first-year tuition£16,000£16,000
    Student living costs: 9 months£1,529 × 9 = £13,761£1,171 × 9 = £10,539
    Partner living costs: 9 months£845 × 9 = £7,605£680 × 9 = £6,120
    One child’s living costs: 9 months£845 × 9 = £7,605£680 × 9 = £6,120
    Total family living-cost requirement£28,971£22,779
Total funds if no tuition is paid£44,971£38,779
    Example tuition deposit already paid£4,000£4,000
    Outstanding tuition after deposit£12,000£12,000
Funds still to show after deposit£40,971£34,779

Use the actual outstanding tuition amount on your CAS and accepted payment evidence. A tuition deposit reduces outstanding tuition only; the family living-cost requirement remains unchanged. The same money cannot be counted twice across family members.

Each applicant’s financial evidence must meet the applicable holding-period and evidence rules. Different permission lengths, separate applications or exemptions may change the calculation. These totals exclude each person’s visa fee, healthcare surcharge, travel and additional household costs.

Check the student financial rules and dependant financial rules with your university’s authorised team before applying.

    Graduate visa family rules

Partners normally need to have been dependants on your current Student or Tier 4 visa. Children have specific rules, including for children born in the UK during your current Student or Graduate permission. Check each family member’s eligibility.

    APPLICATION COSTS ARE ADDITIONAL

Budget for visa fees and healthcare.

    CostCurrent published amount
    Student visa application£558 per applicant
    Graduate visa application£937 per applicant
Student immigration health surcharge£776 per year
Graduate immigration health surchargeUsually £1,035 per year

The health surcharge depends on the immigration permission granted, which can extend beyond course dates. Check the application’s final calculation and current fees before paying. Student fees · Graduate fees · Healthcare surcharge.

    TUITION, MAINTENANCE & APPLICATION COSTS

Example budget including visa fees and healthcare.

These illustrations use £16,000 first-year tuition, the nine-month maintenance amounts above and an assumed 16-month visa for each person. They assume standard Student-route applications, no fee or surcharge exemption, no accommodation deduction, and eligible dependants applying together.

How the healthcare surcharge is calculated

The Student rate is £776 per year per person, including a partner and child on Student dependant permission. In this example, 16 months is charged as 18 months: £776 × 1.5 = £1,164 each. A different visa length may change the amount. Check the official surcharge guidance and the calculation in your application.

    Student applying alone

    Budget itemLondonOutside London
    Sample tuition + 9 months’ maintenance£29,761£26,539
    Student visa fee£558£558
    Healthcare surcharge: assumed 16-month permission£1,164£1,164
    Total example budget£31,483£28,261
Remaining to budget after £4,000 tuition paid£27,483£24,261

    Student, partner and one child

    Budget itemLondonOutside London
    Sample tuition + 9 months’ family maintenance£44,971£38,779
    Visa fees: 3 × £558£1,674£1,674
    Healthcare surcharge: 3 × £1,164£3,492£3,492
    Total example family budget£50,137£43,945
Remaining to budget after £4,000 tuition paid£46,137£39,945

Budget totals and funds evidence are different. Visa fees and the surcharge are paid as part of applying; adding them here does not turn them into extra 28-day bank-balance requirements. The earlier tables show the tuition and maintenance evidence calculation.

A deposit is money already spent, so it reduces the remaining amount to budget, not the overall cost. These examples cover nine months’ maintenance only, even though the assumed permission is longer. Add living costs for the remaining months, flights, priority services, appointments or document costs where charged, and other household spending. They are planning examples, not a complete quotation for your stay.

Check the current fee for each applicant, confirm dependant eligibility and use your actual visa length before making payments.

    OTHER POINTS TO CHECK

English, digital status and future work.

    01

    English evidence for your course.

Student visa English is generally B2 for degree-level study or above and B1 below degree level. Evidence routes and exemptions differ. Ask your sponsor which evidence it can accept; admission-test acceptance alone does not settle every visa requirement. Check Student English guidance.

    02

    Your eVisa and travel document.

Successful Student applicants receive an eVisa. Set up access through your UKVI account and link the passport or travel document you will use for travel. Follow the official eVisa steps.

    03

    Moving into sponsored work.

Skilled Worker normally requires an eligible job, an approved sponsor and salary of at least £41,700 or the occupation’s going rate, whichever is higher. Lower-pay, healthcare, education and transitional provisions have separate conditions. Check job and salary eligibility.

New Skilled Worker applicants and people switching from another route generally need B2 English. Some existing holders with permission before 8 January 2026 have transitional rules. Check the English requirement for your application.

Course admission does not guarantee a visa, a job or settlement. Check the rules actually in force for your application rather than relying on proposals or older headlines.

Reviewed and updated: 19 October 2026
For international applicants and UK residents. Intake-specific information is identified below; confirm live details before applying.

Oxford and Cambridge applications need an earlier timetable than most UK undergraduate choices. Here is what the 2027-entry position means for international applicants and UK home-fee students.

The main 2027 deadline has passed

The main undergraduate UCAS deadline was 15 October 2026 at 6pm UK time. As of this review on 19 October 2026, that date has passed. Do not plan a new standard application on the assumption that the January deadline applies to Oxford or Cambridge. Check the university’s course-specific guidance. Oxford applicant guide · Cambridge dates.

    Exceptions need a direct check

Some Cambridge mature-college courses and foundation-year routes have different deadlines and eligibility rules. These are specific routes, not a general extension. Check Cambridge’s mature-applicant guidance before relying on an alternative date.

Already applied? Prepare for the next stages

    • Check your applicant portal and college emails for written work, additional forms and interviews.
    • Confirm that required admissions tests were booked and taken in the correct sitting.
    • Keep qualifications and contact details accurate, and respond to document requests promptly.

Oxford has changed its test arrangements for 2027 entry: relevant courses use ESAT, TARA or TMUA through UAT-UK, alongside LNAT for Law and UCAT for Medicine. Requirements vary by course. Read Oxford’s current test arrangements.

Other UK choices are still worth exploring

For most other 2027 undergraduate courses, the equal-consideration deadline is 13 January 2027 at 6pm UK time. Always check the actual course deadline. UCAS confirms this date.

International applicants and UK home-fee students

International applicants should check qualification equivalence, English requirements, overseas fees and any visa timetable. UK home-fee applicants should ask about contextual admissions, bursaries and their funding assessment. Neither fee category changes the standard Oxbridge deadline. TURN AN INTEREST INTO AN APPLICATION

    Prepare for research study.

    01

    Find your academic fit.

Identify departments working in your area. Read staff research profiles and ask whether your topic fits the expertise and resources available.

    02

    Check the application requirements.

Confirm the required degree subject, grade equivalence, English evidence, references, writing sample and deadline for your chosen intake.

    03

    Develop a proposal where requested.

Follow the department’s format. Explain the research question, why it matters, relevant literature, proposed methods and how the project can be completed within the time available.

    04

    Clarify supervision.

Ask whether you should approach a supervisor before applying, how supervision is allocated, how often you will meet and what happens if the project changes.

    BUDGET FOR THE WHOLE PROJECT

    Fees, funding and practical costs.

    International applicants

Request tuition for your exact course and intake, deposit and refund terms, and any bench, fieldwork, travel or specialist equipment charges. Check what a scholarship covers and how long it lasts.

    UK residents

Eligible taught or research master’s courses may qualify for England’s Postgraduate Master’s Loan. The course must be a full standalone master’s of at least 180 credits at an eligible institution, with an eligible duration. Age, residence and previous-study conditions apply.

    Check Master’s Loan eligibility ↗

England’s Master’s Loan normally requires you to be under 60 at the start of the relevant academic year. Holding a previous master’s or higher qualification normally prevents a further Master’s Loan. Integrated doctoral routes use different funding arrangements. Use the appropriate national funding body if you normally live elsewhere in the UK.

Check the current loan amount and payment arrangements. Compare it with tuition and living costs; neither a supervisor’s interest nor an academic offer confirms funding.

CHECK YOUR EXACT COURSE AND CIRCUMSTANCES

    International study and family plans.

An MRes title does not guarantee dependants.

For postgraduate courses starting from 1 January 2024, the Student dependant route generally requires a PhD, other doctorate or research-based higher degree, alongside the other conditions for a full-time postgraduate course lasting at least nine months. Qualifying government-sponsored students have a separate route.

Ask the university’s authorised immigration team to confirm whether your specific course meets the research-based higher-degree requirement. For example, Bath’s MRes information states that its MRes students on Student visas cannot bring dependants.

Check the official Student dependant rules.

    ATAS and financial evidence

Some applicants in specified sensitive subjects need Academic Technology Approval Scheme clearance. Check your nationality, subject and university instructions early. Read the official ATAS guidance.

Plan tuition, visa costs and any required maintenance evidence. Use our Student visa budget calculator for an estimate and confirm your evidence with the university.

    Graduate visa planning

For eligible non-doctoral graduates, applications made by 31 December 2026 receive two years; applications from 1 January 2027 receive 18 months. The three-year provision is for PhD or other doctoral qualifications, not a research master’s simply because it is research-focused. Full eligibility conditions apply. Check the Graduate visa guidance.

    PREPARE YOUR NEXT CONVERSATION

    Your research study checklist.

    QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK

A few things to think through.

How long does a research master’s take?

Duration varies by award, university and study mode. Confirm the full-time or part-time period, submission deadline and any continuation fees on the course page.

Do I always need a research proposal?

Requirements differ. Some courses ask for a proposal and supervisor contact; others provide a choice of projects. Follow the department’s application instructions.

Will the course lead directly to a PhD?

Ask about named progression routes and their academic and funding conditions. A master’s place does not guarantee doctoral admission or a funded studentship.

Can I bring my partner and children?

Ask the university to confirm the course’s eligibility under the Student dependant rules and check your family’s circumstances. An MRes or MPhil title alone does not settle the question.

    02 · CHECK THE DETAIL

    Accreditation belongs to the course.

Search the Engineering Council’s recognised-course database for your qualification. Check the course title, campus, entry year and the professional-registration learning outcomes listed.

A degree is one part of the journey.

Accreditation can support a route towards professional registration. It does not automatically confer Chartered Engineer or another professional title: further learning, professional competence and assessment may be required for the route you choose.

    03 · PREPARE YOUR APPLICATION

Match your preparation to the programme.

    01

    Subjects and qualifications

Check required mathematics and science subjects, grades and accepted equivalents. Ask how BTEC, T Levels, Access qualifications or overseas diplomas are assessed.

    02

    Direct entry or foundation year

Compare the entry conditions, additional year of study, costs and progression requirements. A foundation year does not mean unconditional progression to every engineering degree.

    03

    Postgraduate preparation

Check the required previous degree, technical knowledge and any experience, portfolio or research proposal. For research options, explore our research master’s guide.

04 · PLAN THE PRACTICAL SIDE

    Fees, funding and your circumstances.

    UK residents

    • Request a formal home-fee assessment; residence alone does not guarantee eligibility.
    • Check Student Finance eligibility for your course, previous study, residence and start date.
    • Compare tuition, accommodation, travel and project costs, plus provider bursaries.

    International applicants

    • Confirm overseas tuition fees, deposit and refund terms for your intake.
    • Check accepted English evidence and the course-specific score.
    • Ask about Student visa sponsorship and any conditions affecting placements.

MEng and MSc funding are different.

An integrated undergraduate MEng is not funded through the standalone Postgraduate Master’s Loan. The applicable undergraduate funding route depends on your start date and eligibility. For standalone MSc or research master’s study, check the Master’s Loan eligibility rules with the responsible funding body.

    Does your course need ATAS?

Some engineering study requires Academic Technology Approval Scheme clearance, depending on your nationality, subject and course. Ask admissions early and follow the official ATAS guidance before making your application and travel plans.

International students can also read our UK visa and student budget guide for funding requirements and a budget calculator.

05 · THINK BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Look for experience you can build on.

Ask how design projects, laboratories and employer involvement work in practice. Check whether a placement is guaranteed or competitively secured, who finds the employer, and whether an additional year changes your fees or visa arrangements.

Compare technical, management and research careers without assuming a degree guarantees a particular job. Our career coaching can help you connect your interests with the skills you want to develop.

    YOUR NEXT STEP

    Before you apply.

Use this checklist as you compare courses. Your selections are not saved or submitted.

    COMMON QUESTIONS

    A few things to clarify.

Is every UK engineering degree accredited?

Do not assume this from the university name. Search the Engineering Council database and confirm the exact programme and entry year with the provider.

Can I move from a BEng to an MEng?

Some providers offer transfers subject to grades, available places and course rules. Ask about the conditions and any change to fees, funding or visa arrangements.

    Are January intakes available?

Intakes vary by programme. Confirm the advertised start date and application deadline directly with the provider, especially for postgraduate courses.

Will completing the degree make me a Chartered Engineer?

A degree alone does not award professional registration. Your learning and professional competence must meet the requirements of the relevant registration route.
