01 · CREATIVE THINKING, PRACTICAL QUESTIONS

Design for people, places and the future.

Architecture brings together design, technology, environmental thinking and an understanding of how people use space. Compare courses by their studio projects, technical teaching and design approach, as well as the qualification they award.

Ask how you will learn through drawing, model-making, digital tools, building analysis and collaborative work. Look at student projects and visit an open day to understand the school’s approach.

Use this as a starting shortlist. Universities assess equivalent qualifications and portfolios individually. Check fee status, deadlines, availability and how each course supports your intended professional route before accepting an offer. Inclusion here does not imply a Knighton partnership or guarantee admission or funding.

02 · UNDERSTAND THE PROFESSIONAL ROUTE

    Check your route to registration.

To use the title architect in the UK, you must be registered with the Architects Registration Board (ARB). A degree alone does not confer registration.

    Architecture education is changing.

ARB is transitioning to a new education framework, with completion planned by December 2028. Courses under the previous framework and the new framework currently coexist. Ask your university which arrangements apply to your exact qualification and cohort. Read ARB’s current framework guidance →

Under the new UK framework, the route can involve an accredited master’s-level qualification plus an accredited practice-level qualification, or a combined accredited qualification covering both sets of outcomes. Professional practical experience remains part of demonstrating competence. The experience rules during transition depend on the qualification: confirm them with your provider. ARB guidance for students and trainees →

    ARB accreditation and RIBA validation

RIBA validates architecture programmes and examinations; ARB is the UK registration body. Check both statuses where relevant and confirm how the course supports your intended route. RIBA validation or membership should not be treated as UK registration. Explore RIBA validation →

If you already hold overseas architecture qualifications, ask ARB which registration route applies to your background before choosing further study. Taking a UK master’s does not automatically resolve recognition of previous qualifications.

03 · MAKE YOUR APPLICATION YOUR OWN

    Show how you think.

Follow each school’s portfolio brief. Page limits, file size, accepted media, submission dates and interview arrangements can differ. The suggestions below are a preparation checklist; the university’s instructions take priority.

    01

    Include the development of ideas

Use selected sketches, experiments and iterations to explain how a project evolved. Give each project enough context for someone unfamiliar with your work.

    02

    Choose work with purpose

Where the brief allows, consider drawing, photography, models or other creative work that shows observation and spatial thinking. Present your own contribution clearly, especially in group projects.

    03

    Prepare to discuss your choices

Be ready to explain a design decision, what you learned and what you would change. Check subject and grade requirements separately: a strong portfolio does not replace academic conditions.

04 · PLAN THE FULL COST

    A budget beyond tuition.

Request the fee for your exact course, intake and fee status. Ask which costs are included and budget for accommodation, travel, model-making materials, printing, equipment, software and any field trips.

    UK residents

    • Confirm your home-fee assessment and Student Finance eligibility.
    • Check how prior study, study mode and start date affect support.
    • Ask about bursaries and support for studio or materials costs.

    International applicants

    • Confirm overseas entry equivalents and accepted English evidence.
    • Review tuition, deposits, payment dates and refund terms.
    • Check visa sponsorship, campus and conditions affecting work or placements.

MArch funding needs a separate check.

GOV.UK directs applicants for full-time, ARB-accredited MArch Part 2 study to undergraduate funding support. Different conditions can apply to part-time study or other MArch courses. Confirm the correct funding route with the provider and your funding body, particularly while qualifications transition. Check the official architecture funding section →

For international budgeting, see our UK visa and student budget guide.

    05 · COMPARE THE EXPERIENCE

Find a school that fits your goals.

Compare the studio environment, technical facilities, tutor feedback, sustainability teaching and support for practical experience. Ask about the weekly workload and how projects are assessed.

Check course length, application deadlines and advertised intakes on the provider’s current page. Explore progression into professional practice or related design and built-environment careers with our career coaching.

    Before you apply

Use this checklist while building your shortlist. Selections are not saved or submitted.

    COMMON QUESTIONS

    A few things to clarify.

Does an architecture degree make me an architect?

It does not automatically grant professional registration. Check the appropriate ARB route and the further qualifications, experience and assessments required.

Does everyone still follow Parts 1, 2 and 3?

Existing routes and new qualifications coexist during the transition. Ask your provider how your cohort will progress and which requirements apply.

Do all architecture courses require the same portfolio?

No. Follow each course’s current brief, including format and deadlines. Ask admissions if your creative background or qualification differs from the examples listed.

Can UK residents apply for Student Finance?

Support depends on personal eligibility and the exact course. Architecture has specific funding provisions, so confirm the relevant route rather than assuming every master’s uses a Postgraduate Master’s Loan.

  • San Francisco State University: International Study Planning

San Francisco State University: International Study Planning

Reviewed and updated: 19 October 2026
For international applicants and UK residents. Intake-specific information is identified below; confirm live details before applying.

San Francisco State University is a US study option that needs its own admissions, cost and immigration planning. UK home-fee status does not transfer to a US university fee category.

    Choose your level and programme

Use SF State’s official website to find the relevant undergraduate or graduate department. Check required qualifications, transcripts, English evidence, subject prerequisites and the deadline for the specific term. Transfer and postgraduate applications can have different requirements from first-year entry.

    Understand the international cost calculation

For 2026–27, SF State lists an additional non-resident charge of US$471 per unit for international and out-of-state students, on top of the relevant base tuition and fees. This is not the total annual cost. Add housing, food, insurance, books and travel, and check the programme’s unit load and extra charges. Read the current cost-of-attendance tables.

    Funding and scholarships

Do not use a domestic-student aid estimate as an international scholarship offer. Ask about awards available to your status and programme, their application process and renewal conditions. Graduate applicants should review SF State’s graduate funding guidance separately.

For applicants based in the UK

Compare the complete US cost with a UK home-fee course before committing. Ask your UK funding body about any proposed overseas study rather than assuming a full US degree will receive the support associated with a UK course. If affordability is the deciding factor, compare UK degree and pathway options alongside the US route.

    Before arranging travel

After admission, follow the university’s international-student instructions for financial evidence and immigration documents. Confirm the current rules with the institution and US authorities; citizenship and individual circumstances matter. Do not treat an admission offer as a visa approval.

    Prepare your comparison

    • Exact degree and term of entry.
    • Academic and English requirements.
    • Total annual costs and realistic confirmed funding.
    • Housing, insurance and immigration timetable.

Syracuse University: Entry, Costs & Scholarships for International Students

Reviewed and updated: 19 October 2026
For international applicants and UK residents. Intake-specific information is identified below; confirm live details before applying.

A Syracuse application should be built around the degree, entry route and full annual budget. This guide replaces older broad claims with official admissions and cost resources for your own intake.

    Check your entry route

For undergraduate study, read Syracuse’s international admission requirements for school records, English evidence and other documents. Requirements can differ by academic school, including portfolio or audition requirements. A pathway, conditional offer, transfer application and direct degree entry should not be treated as interchangeable.

Tuition is only part of the budget

Syracuse publishes an international cost-of-attendance estimate covering an academic year. Check the year, programme and living arrangements and plan for future annual increases. Do not use an older pathway fee as the price of the full degree. See current international cost guidance.

    Scholarships are assessed separately

Syracuse identifies merit scholarships for international undergraduates. The amount, eligibility and renewal conditions depend on the actual award; scholarships are not guaranteed by an application or agent referral. Graduate funding must be checked with the relevant programme. Read the university’s international funding information.

If you are a UK resident

Your UK home-fee classification does not create a US home-student fee or scholarship entitlement. Compare the US budget with UK options, and verify any overseas-funding proposal directly with the responsible funding body before committing. Use our UK resident guide to frame that comparison.

    Application planning

    • Choose the exact degree, school and term.
    • Check document, English and any creative-submission requirements.
    • Obtain a written cost estimate and read deposit and refund terms.
    • Confirm financial evidence and immigration steps with Syracuse after admission.

    Speak to Knighton

We can help you organise your questions and compare suitable study routes. Only the university confirms admission, credit transfer and scholarship awards, and the relevant authority decides immigration applications.

Scholarships and discounted fees depend on the published eligibility rules and your offer. Completing any of these degrees does not automatically confer Chartered Engineer status or guarantee employment.

    03 · CHECK YOUR PREPARATION

Entry requirements depend on the course.

    01

    Your academic background

For undergraduate study, check required mathematics and science subjects. For specialist master’s study, confirm accepted engineering, physical science or earth science degrees and the required classification or overseas equivalent.

    02

    Your technical preparation

Ask what mathematics, fluid mechanics, geology, statistics and computing knowledge the programme expects. Request advice if your first degree is related but does not cover all these areas.

    03

    Evidence and deadlines

Check transcripts, references, English evidence, any experience requirements and application deadlines for your exact intake. Research applicants should also confirm proposal and supervision arrangements.

04 · LOOK BEYOND THE TITLE

Compare what you will actually do.

    • Ask which software and data-analysis tools are taught and how access is provided.
    • Compare laboratory work, individual projects, group studies and assessment methods.
    • Ask how the curriculum treats safety, environmental impacts and uncertainty in technical decisions.
    • Check the depth of coverage of emerging subsurface applications rather than assuming every energy degree teaches them.
    • Confirm whether any placement is guaranteed or competitively secured and whether it adds fees or study time.

Check accreditation for the exact programme

Use the Engineering Council course search to check recognised qualifications and their registration learning outcomes. Confirm the campus and entry year. Completing a degree does not automatically award Chartered Engineer status.

05 · PLAN FEES AND PRACTICALITIES

    Build a realistic study budget.

Request tuition for your intake, study mode and fee status. Add accommodation, travel, equipment and any fieldwork or project costs. Review deposits, instalments and refund conditions before paying.

    UK residents

    • Confirm home-fee status and funding eligibility for the exact qualification.
    • Check the funding body’s rules for your start date, residence and previous study.
    • Explore university scholarships, employer support and suitable part-time options.

    International applicants

    • Confirm overseas qualifications and course-specific English evidence.
    • Check visa sponsorship for the course and campus.
    • Ask early whether ATAS clearance applies to your nationality and subject.

Follow the official ATAS guidance where clearance is required. For international budgeting, use our UK student visa and budget guide. For funding questions, start with our Student Finance guide and confirm your position with the responsible funding body.

06 · CONNECT STUDY WITH YOUR GOALS

Think about skills and career fit.

Explore reservoir modelling, subsurface analysis, production-related work and research, alongside applications in carbon storage or geothermal projects. Compare the additional knowledge employers expect for each area; specialist skills do not transfer automatically into every role.

Ask departments about recent graduate destinations, employer engagement and project opportunities. Use career coaching to compare your interests, preferred working environment and development needs. Course enrolment does not guarantee a job, salary or immigration outcome.

    YOUR NEXT STEP

    Before you apply.

Use this checklist as you compare courses. Selections are not saved or submitted.

    COMMON QUESTIONS

    A few things to clarify.

Is reservoir engineering the same as petroleum engineering?

Reservoir engineering is a specialist focus within the wider field. Petroleum courses may also cover drilling, wells and production. Compare module content rather than relying on the degree title.

    Can a geoscience graduate apply?

Some programmes accept relevant earth science or other numerate degrees. Ask the university to assess your transcript and confirm any technical preparation required.

Can these skills support the energy transition?

Subsurface knowledge can be relevant to carbon storage, geothermal energy and other storage applications. Look for explicit teaching and projects in your intended area, and check the skills employers require.

    Are January intakes available?

Start dates vary by programme, campus and mode. Check the university’s current course page and application deadline rather than assuming every course offers January entry.
