Knighton Visits the University of Leicester’s School of Engineering
7 November 2026 · Leicester, UK · Engineering & practical learning
On Saturday, 7 November 2026, Gokhan Koyunlu from Knighton Educational Consultancy Ltd visited the University of Leicester, with a particular focus on its School of Engineering. The visit offered a closer look at engineering teaching, practical learning spaces and the projects that help students connect their studies with engineering applications.
From an introductory presentation to computer laboratories, workshops and student racing cars, the photographs record several different sides of engineering at Leicester. For Knighton, seeing these spaces first-hand helps bring course conversations to life for students considering their next step.

Inside Leicester’s distinctive Engineering Building
The Engineering Building provides a memorable setting for studying the subject. Designed by James Stirling and James Gowan and completed in 1962, it is Grade II* listed. Its red brick tower and adjoining glass-roofed laboratories and workshops reflect the close relationship between engineering ideas and the spaces used to test them. A closer look at engineering study
The visit included a presentation introducing engineering at Leicester. Photos of the session show discussion of course choices, student timetables, employability and engineering projects. One presentation focused on Engineering for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, highlighting the connection between technical ideas and developing solutions.

Leicester’s undergraduate engineering options include BEng and MEng routes in:
- Aerospace Engineering
- Biomedical Engineering
- Electrical and Electronic Engineering
- General Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Engineering for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, listed for 2027 entry onwards
The university also lists an Engineering with Foundation Year BEng. Students can compare the routes and check the individual course pages for entry requirements and available options. Explore Leicester’s undergraduate engineering courses ↗
Laboratories and workshops that connect theory with practice
The photographs show computer-equipped learning spaces alongside a larger workshop environment. Together, these give prospective students a view of the different settings involved in an engineering education, from working with digital tools to exploring physical systems and equipment.

The School’s published facilities include a student workshop with manufacturing and rapid prototyping equipment, an Advanced Microscopy Facility and the Charles Wilson Wind Tunnel. The university describes opportunities for students to use the wind tunnel in Year 3 and Year 4 projects. Find out about engineering facilities ↗
Student racing cars and collaborative engineering
A student racing car display was another highlight of the visit. The photograph shows a vehicle alongside University of Leicester Racing material, offering a visible example of engineering taking shape beyond a lecture slide.

Formula Student is an extracurricular activity supported by Leicester’s School of Engineering. Students design, manufacture and test a racing vehicle for the annual competition. A project of this kind brings together technical work, teamwork and the practical challenge of making different components function as one system. Read about Formula Student at Leicester ↗
Postgraduate engineering options
For graduates exploring further study, the School’s postgraduate course list includes:
- Advanced Electrical and Electronic Engineering MSc
- Advanced Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Management MSc
- Advanced Mechanical Engineering MSc
- Advanced Mechanical Engineering with Management MSc
- Aerospace Engineering MSc
- Biomedical Engineering MSc
- Embedded Systems and Control Engineering MSc
- Master of Engineering Management (MEM)
Many of these programmes offer a Year in Industry option. Course structure, accreditation and availability should be checked on the relevant programme page. Explore postgraduate engineering programmes ↗
Helping students explore their options
Choosing an engineering degree involves thinking about the subject you enjoy, the way you prefer to learn and the direction you want your studies to take. This visit gave Knighton a closer view of Leicester’s engineering environment and useful context for those conversations.
