What does it mean to study at university?

A deeper understanding of your subject. A wider circle of people. The confidence to ask better questions—and decide what comes next.

By Knighton Education Consultancy · Reviewed 19 October 2026
For international applicants, UK residents and returning learners.
Students together on a university campus
Learning, friendships and experiences beyond the classroom.
    More than a timetable

    A place to learn.
    Room to become yourself.

University brings together structured study, independent work and a community of people exploring ideas. You develop subject knowledge, but you also practise making decisions, testing evidence, working with others and taking responsibility for your progress.

The experience will be different for a school leaver moving into halls, an international student arriving in the UK, and a parent studying around work. A good choice makes sense for your academic goals and your everyday life.

Ask what you want to learn, what you want to try, and what support will help you get there.
    01

Learn how to think, not only what to remember.

Lectures introduce ideas; seminars, studios, laboratories and projects give you ways to question and apply them. Read the course’s teaching and assessment details: essays, examinations, practical work and group projects ask different things of you.

    02

    Explore research and real problems.

Look for opportunities to develop your own project, attend departmental talks or contribute to research-related activities. Access depends on the course and department. Ask what undergraduates actually do, how supervision works and which facilities they can use.

    03

Find people, interests and a sense of belonging.

Subject societies, cultural groups, sport, volunteering and creative activities can help you meet people and try something new. Check the students’ union’s current opportunities and think about travel, accessibility and the time you can realistically give.

    04

Build experience for your next step.

Ask about careers advice, employer events, project work, placements and alumni activities. These can help you explore options and practise applications, but an advertised placement opportunity is not always a guaranteed placement. Find out how students are selected and supported.

    05

    Grow in independence—with support.

Managing study, money and new responsibilities takes practice. Compare academic-skills support, disability services, wellbeing provision and personal tutoring. If you commute, work or care for family, ask how attendance and support appointments fit your schedule.

There is more than one starting point

    Find the route that fits.

Your qualifications and ambitions help determine where to begin. Compare the full journey, including progression requirements, time and cost.

    Planning for 2027 entry

For most undergraduate courses, the UCAS equal-consideration deadline is 13 January 2027 at 6pm UK time. Some courses have different deadlines. The main Oxford and Cambridge deadline for 2027 entry was 15 October 2026 and has passed at the time of this review. Check the UCAS deadline and our Oxbridge guide.

England’s funding arrangements change for eligible courses starting from January 2027. Government guidance says applications open from late October 2026 for January 2027 starts, with applications for courses starting from August 2027 opening in spring 2027. Check the funding timetable. Use the relevant national funding body if you normally live elsewhere in the UK.

Home-fee classification and student-finance eligibility are separate assessments. Check the rules for the UK nation where you will study and your personal circumstances. UKCISA explains fee assessment in England.

    Questions students ask

A few things to think through.

    Should I choose by ranking?

Use rankings as one comparison tool, then examine the subject, teaching, accreditation, support and cost. Look at what a ranking measures and the year it covers. Your strongest option should fit your own goals and circumstances.

Can I return to education after working or raising a family?

Explore the provider’s mature-applicant route and how it assesses your qualifications and experience. Ask about Access courses, foundation routes, HND study or postgraduate options where appropriate. Confirm attendance, workload and funding before deciding.

Does living in the UK mean I pay home fees?

Not automatically. Fee status is assessed against the relevant rules, which consider more than your current address. Ask the institution for a formal assessment and check funding eligibility separately.

Is university the only route to my career?

Compare it with appropriate technical qualifications, apprenticeships or other professional training. Work backwards from your intended role: check what employers and any professional regulator require, then compare time, cost and learning style.

Will a degree guarantee a job?

No. A course can help you develop knowledge and experience, but outcomes also depend on your skills, applications, experience and the labour market. Ask what career support is available and how advertised placements work.

    How can Knighton help?

We can help you explore subjects, compare study routes and prepare your application questions. Bring your qualifications, preferred location, budget and target start date. Universities, funding bodies and immigration authorities make their own final decisions.

Before accepting an offer: confirm the exact award, campus, fee status, full tuition commitment, accreditation for your entry year and any ATAS requirement. A listed university is not a guarantee of admission, funding or a Knighton partnership.

    02 · CHECK THE DETAIL

    Accreditation belongs to the course.

Search the Engineering Council’s recognised-course database for your qualification. Check the course title, campus, entry year and the professional-registration learning outcomes listed.

A degree is one part of the journey.

Accreditation can support a route towards professional registration. It does not automatically confer Chartered Engineer or another professional title: further learning, professional competence and assessment may be required for the route you choose.

    03 · PREPARE YOUR APPLICATION

Match your preparation to the programme.

    01

    Subjects and qualifications

Check required mathematics and science subjects, grades and accepted equivalents. Ask how BTEC, T Levels, Access qualifications or overseas diplomas are assessed.

    02

    Direct entry or foundation year

Compare the entry conditions, additional year of study, costs and progression requirements. A foundation year does not mean unconditional progression to every engineering degree.

    03

    Postgraduate preparation

Check the required previous degree, technical knowledge and any experience, portfolio or research proposal. For research options, explore our research master’s guide.

04 · PLAN THE PRACTICAL SIDE

    Fees, funding and your circumstances.

    UK residents

    • Request a formal home-fee assessment; residence alone does not guarantee eligibility.
    • Check Student Finance eligibility for your course, previous study, residence and start date.
    • Compare tuition, accommodation, travel and project costs, plus provider bursaries.

    International applicants

    • Confirm overseas tuition fees, deposit and refund terms for your intake.
    • Check accepted English evidence and the course-specific score.
    • Ask about Student visa sponsorship and any conditions affecting placements.

MEng and MSc funding are different.

An integrated undergraduate MEng is not funded through the standalone Postgraduate Master’s Loan. The applicable undergraduate funding route depends on your start date and eligibility. For standalone MSc or research master’s study, check the Master’s Loan eligibility rules with the responsible funding body.

    Does your course need ATAS?

Some engineering study requires Academic Technology Approval Scheme clearance, depending on your nationality, subject and course. Ask admissions early and follow the official ATAS guidance before making your application and travel plans.

International students can also read our UK visa and student budget guide for funding requirements and a budget calculator.

05 · THINK BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Look for experience you can build on.

Ask how design projects, laboratories and employer involvement work in practice. Check whether a placement is guaranteed or competitively secured, who finds the employer, and whether an additional year changes your fees or visa arrangements.

Compare technical, management and research careers without assuming a degree guarantees a particular job. Our career coaching can help you connect your interests with the skills you want to develop.

    YOUR NEXT STEP

    Before you apply.

Use this checklist as you compare courses. Your selections are not saved or submitted.

    COMMON QUESTIONS

    A few things to clarify.

Is every UK engineering degree accredited?

Do not assume this from the university name. Search the Engineering Council database and confirm the exact programme and entry year with the provider.

Can I move from a BEng to an MEng?

Some providers offer transfers subject to grades, available places and course rules. Ask about the conditions and any change to fees, funding or visa arrangements.

    Are January intakes available?

Intakes vary by programme. Confirm the advertised start date and application deadline directly with the provider, especially for postgraduate courses.

Will completing the degree make me a Chartered Engineer?

A degree alone does not award professional registration. Your learning and professional competence must meet the requirements of the relevant registration route.
