First, check the course and the provider. Your own circumstances also affect the funding you can get.

Next, check the rules for your nationality, where you live, your age and any past study.

Your full budget

Finally, plan your full budget. Student loans are not free education: you must repay them under the rules for your loan.

Student finance: find your funding route.

Undergraduate funding

You may be able to get help with course fees and living costs. However, the rules for these two types of support can differ. Check both before you plan your budget.

Official eligibility guidance ↗

January 2027 onwards

Many courses that start from 1 January 2027 use England’s Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) system. Therefore, check the guidance for your exact start date and course.

Postgraduate options

Master’s loans have their own rules. In England, you normally need a full, standalone master’s course worth at least 180 credits. In contrast, a standalone certificate or diploma does not qualify for this loan.

Master’s Loan eligibility ↗

The process depends on your home nation: England · Scotland · Wales · Northern Ireland. Knighton helps you compare study options; the relevant funding authority decides eligibility. Loans are repayable under the applicable rules.

Before you decide

A little clarity helps.

Can every UK resident get student finance?

Living in the UK alone does not guarantee student finance. Your nationality or immigration status, residence history, previous study, course and start date all matter. Check the official guidance for your home nation before applying.

Which student finance route applies to my course?

Confirm the exact course, provider, campus and intake with the institution. Bradford and Greenwich list continuation degrees after IYZ or IY1; check funding for the initial pathway separately. UHE’s Construction Management with Foundation Year remains subject to approval in the supplied brochure.

Is postgraduate student finance the same as undergraduate funding?

Different rules apply. England’s Postgraduate Master’s Loan is for eligible full, standalone master’s courses, normally worth at least 180 credits. Standalone postgraduate certificates and diplomas do not qualify for that loan. PGCE and pre-registration healthcare routes need separate checks.

How can Knighton help with student finance routes?

We can help you compare the listed courses and prepare questions about entry requirements, intake and course funding. Your first consultation is free. The relevant funding authority makes the eligibility decision.

Where should I check the current rules?

First, use the official guide for your home nation and course start date. The rules differ across the UK. Your funding authority then decides whether you qualify. Knighton can help you explore your study options.
