Connect technical knowledge with your interests in subsurface energy and storage.
    01 · UNDERSTAND THE SUBJECT

    What happens beneath the surface?

Reservoir engineering examines how fluids behave in underground rock formations and how a reservoir can be evaluated and managed. It connects engineering calculations with geological information, measurements and computer models.

When comparing courses, look for fluid flow through porous rock, reservoir characterisation, simulation, pressure and production analysis, uncertainty and development planning. Ask how much practical work you will do with data and modelling tools.

Choose the problems you want to work on, then compare the skills each course teaches.
    02 · COMPARE YOUR OPTIONS

    Reservoir, petroleum or geoenergy?

Study focusWhat to compareQuestions for admissions
Reservoir engineeringReservoir behaviour, characterisation, simulation and management.Which modules, datasets and modelling projects develop specialist skills?
Petroleum engineeringA broader combination of reservoir, drilling, well and production topics. How much of the programme focuses on reservoirs rather than other operations?
Sustainable geoenergySubsurface energy and storage, with course-specific applications.Does it cover carbon storage, geothermal energy or hydrogen storage in sufficient depth for your goals?
Research studyA focused technical investigation with academic supervision. Is a suitable supervisor available, and what proposal, preparation and funding are required?

For an example of the broader direction, Heriot-Watt’s Sustainable Geoenergy MSc covers subsurface energy and CO₂ storage alongside geothermal and transitional gas topics. Check its current curriculum, delivery location and entry requirements directly.

Scholarships and discounted fees depend on the published eligibility rules and your offer. Completing any of these degrees does not automatically confer Chartered Engineer status or guarantee employment.

    03 · CHECK YOUR PREPARATION

Entry requirements depend on the course.

    01

    Your academic background

For undergraduate study, check required mathematics and science subjects. For specialist master’s study, confirm accepted engineering, physical science or earth science degrees and the required classification or overseas equivalent.

    02

    Your technical preparation

Ask what mathematics, fluid mechanics, geology, statistics and computing knowledge the programme expects. Request advice if your first degree is related but does not cover all these areas.

    03

    Evidence and deadlines

Check transcripts, references, English evidence, any experience requirements and application deadlines for your exact intake. Research applicants should also confirm proposal and supervision arrangements.

04 · LOOK BEYOND THE TITLE

Compare what you will actually do.

    • Ask which software and data-analysis tools are taught and how access is provided.
    • Compare laboratory work, individual projects, group studies and assessment methods.
    • Ask how the curriculum treats safety, environmental impacts and uncertainty in technical decisions.
    • Check the depth of coverage of emerging subsurface applications rather than assuming every energy degree teaches them.
    • Confirm whether any placement is guaranteed or competitively secured and whether it adds fees or study time.

Check accreditation for the exact programme

Use the Engineering Council course search to check recognised qualifications and their registration learning outcomes. Confirm the campus and entry year. Completing a degree does not automatically award Chartered Engineer status.

05 · PLAN FEES AND PRACTICALITIES

    Build a realistic study budget.

Request tuition for your intake, study mode and fee status. Add accommodation, travel, equipment and any fieldwork or project costs. Review deposits, instalments and refund conditions before paying.

    UK residents

    • Confirm home-fee status and funding eligibility for the exact qualification.
    • Check the funding body’s rules for your start date, residence and previous study.
    • Explore university scholarships, employer support and suitable part-time options.

    International applicants

    • Confirm overseas qualifications and course-specific English evidence.
    • Check visa sponsorship for the course and campus.
    • Ask early whether ATAS clearance applies to your nationality and subject.

Follow the official ATAS guidance where clearance is required. For international budgeting, use our UK student visa and budget guide. For funding questions, start with our Student Finance guide and confirm your position with the responsible funding body.

06 · CONNECT STUDY WITH YOUR GOALS

Think about skills and career fit.

Explore reservoir modelling, subsurface analysis, production-related work and research, alongside applications in carbon storage or geothermal projects. Compare the additional knowledge employers expect for each area; specialist skills do not transfer automatically into every role.

Ask departments about recent graduate destinations, employer engagement and project opportunities. Use career coaching to compare your interests, preferred working environment and development needs. Course enrolment does not guarantee a job, salary or immigration outcome.

    YOUR NEXT STEP

    Before you apply.

Use this checklist as you compare courses. Selections are not saved or submitted.

    COMMON QUESTIONS

    A few things to clarify.

Is reservoir engineering the same as petroleum engineering?

Reservoir engineering is a specialist focus within the wider field. Petroleum courses may also cover drilling, wells and production. Compare module content rather than relying on the degree title.

    Can a geoscience graduate apply?

Some programmes accept relevant earth science or other numerate degrees. Ask the university to assess your transcript and confirm any technical preparation required.

Can these skills support the energy transition?

Subsurface knowledge can be relevant to carbon storage, geothermal energy and other storage applications. Look for explicit teaching and projects in your intended area, and check the skills employers require.

    Are January intakes available?

Start dates vary by programme, campus and mode. Check the university’s current course page and application deadline rather than assuming every course offers January entry.
