COMPARE THE COURSE BEHIND THE TITLE
Find the research route that fits.
Research master’s study can combine methods training with an extended independent project. The balance of teaching, supervision and research differs by university and subject.
| Route | What to explore | What to confirm |
|---|
| MRes | Research training alongside a substantial project | Taught/research balance, project choice and assessment |
| MPhil | A focused research project and thesis | Programme structure, supervision and any taught components |
| Master’s by Research | Research-led study within a specialist department | Exact award, duration and research expectations |
| Taught MA / MSc | Structured modules with a dissertation or project | Whether the project depth meets your research goals |
Titles are not interchangeable classifications. Read the actual programme specification and ask how the university defines the course for admissions, funding and immigration purposes.
Start with the question you want to investigate—and the people who can help you investigate it.

COMPARE SPECIFIC COURSES
Universities, fees and intakes.
Selected examples checked on 19 October 2026. Fees below are for the stated full-time course and entry year, before scholarships. Home-fee eligibility is assessed separately from nationality. Course links lead to official university information.
| University & course | Full-time duration | Published tuition | Listed intakes | Student visa dependants |
|---|
University of Bath MRes Social Sciences (Advanced Quantitative Methods) ↗ | 1 year | 2027/28: Home: not yet published, linked to the UKRI rate. Overseas: £25,200. Official fees ↗ | September 2027 | No under the ordinary research-course category. Bath says its MRes courses do not meet the research-based degree criterion. A qualifying government-sponsored exception may apply. |
Swansea University MA by Research in International Development ↗ | 1 year | Jan / Apr / Jul 2027: UK: £5,238; international: £19,900. Oct 2027: UK: £5,450; international: £20,900. | January, April, July and October are listed in the course fee schedule. Confirm the next available application window and supervisor capacity. | Potentially eligible, subject to confirmation. Swansea’s guidance includes postgraduate research degrees lasting 9+ months. Ask its visa team to confirm this course’s CAS classification and your family’s eligibility. University guidance ↗ |
University of Portsmouth MRes Science and Health ↗ | 1 year | 2026/27 (including Jan 2027): UK: £9,700; international/EU: £18,600. 2027/28: fees not yet confirmed. | January 2027, September 2027 and January 2028 listed. The published international application deadline for January 2027 was 1 October 2026 and has passed; ask about a later intake. | Course-specific confirmation required. Do not infer eligibility from the MRes title. The course page reviewed does not confirm dependant eligibility; obtain written confirmation from the university’s visa team. |
Birmingham City University Masters by Research in Business and Management (MRes) ↗ | 12 months | 2026/27: UK full-time: £6,400. International: not offered on the current course listing. | January 2027 | Not applicable to an international Student-route application. The current course page says the course is not available to international students. UK-resident applicants should confirm their admission and immigration circumstances. |

Read dependant status as course-specific guidance.
“Potentially eligible” is not a visa approval. For a research-based higher degree, ask the university to confirm the course classification, full-time status, duration and CAS information. Family relationship, financial and other immigration conditions still apply. Check the GOV.UK dependant rules.
Fees and start dates can change or close early. Confirm the exact intake, fee status, additional research costs and dependant position in writing before paying a deposit. Portsmouth’s published application deadlines ↗.
TURN AN INTEREST INTO AN APPLICATION
Prepare for research study.
01Find your academic fit.
Identify departments working in your area. Read staff research profiles and ask whether your topic fits the expertise and resources available.
02Check the application requirements.
Confirm the required degree subject, grade equivalence, English evidence, references, writing sample and deadline for your chosen intake.
03Develop a proposal where requested.
Follow the department’s format. Explain the research question, why it matters, relevant literature, proposed methods and how the project can be completed within the time available.
04Clarify supervision.
Ask whether you should approach a supervisor before applying, how supervision is allocated, how often you will meet and what happens if the project changes.
BUDGET FOR THE WHOLE PROJECT
Fees, funding and practical costs.
International applicants
Request tuition for your exact course and intake, deposit and refund terms, and any bench, fieldwork, travel or specialist equipment charges. Check what a scholarship covers and how long it lasts.
UK residents
Eligible taught or research master’s courses may qualify for England’s Postgraduate Master’s Loan. The course must be a full standalone master’s of at least 180 credits at an eligible institution, with an eligible duration. Age, residence and previous-study conditions apply.
Check Master’s Loan eligibility ↗
England’s Master’s Loan normally requires you to be under 60 at the start of the relevant academic year. Holding a previous master’s or higher qualification normally prevents a further Master’s Loan. Integrated doctoral routes use different funding arrangements. Use the appropriate national funding body if you normally live elsewhere in the UK.
Check the current loan amount and payment arrangements. Compare it with tuition and living costs; neither a supervisor’s interest nor an academic offer confirms funding.
CHECK YOUR EXACT COURSE AND CIRCUMSTANCES
International study and family plans.
An MRes title does not guarantee dependants.
For postgraduate courses starting from 1 January 2024, the Student dependant route generally requires a PhD, other doctorate or research-based higher degree, alongside the other conditions for a full-time postgraduate course lasting at least nine months. Qualifying government-sponsored students have a separate route.
Ask the university’s authorised immigration team to confirm whether your specific course meets the research-based higher-degree requirement. For example, Bath’s MRes information states that its MRes students on Student visas cannot bring dependants.
Check the official Student dependant rules.
ATAS and financial evidence
Some applicants in specified sensitive subjects need Academic Technology Approval Scheme clearance. Check your nationality, subject and university instructions early. Read the official ATAS guidance.
Plan tuition, visa costs and any required maintenance evidence. Use our Student visa budget calculator for an estimate and confirm your evidence with the university.
Graduate visa planning
For eligible non-doctoral graduates, applications made by 31 December 2026 receive two years; applications from 1 January 2027 receive 18 months. The three-year provision is for PhD or other doctoral qualifications, not a research master’s simply because it is research-focused. Full eligibility conditions apply. Check the Graduate visa guidance.
QUESTIONS STUDENTS ASK
A few things to think through.
How long does a research master’s take?
Duration varies by award, university and study mode. Confirm the full-time or part-time period, submission deadline and any continuation fees on the course page.
Do I always need a research proposal?
Requirements differ. Some courses ask for a proposal and supervisor contact; others provide a choice of projects. Follow the department’s application instructions.
Will the course lead directly to a PhD?
Ask about named progression routes and their academic and funding conditions. A master’s place does not guarantee doctoral admission or a funded studentship.
Can I bring my partner and children?
Ask the university to confirm the course’s eligibility under the Student dependant rules and check your family’s circumstances. An MRes or MPhil title alone does not settle the question.
